V8 conversion inquiry

Hey!

Who has information about installing a small block chevrolet into a MGB? Of particular interest is the exhaust routing and motor mounts.

Are there links with buildups available? Possibly a web community or forum for V8 conversions?

Thanks!
Jamie

A sbc isn't really the engine to go with. A Ford 302, chevey 60deg V6(2.8, 3.1, 3.4), or buick/rover/olds 215 would fit much easier. I currently have a 2.8 in mine, and I'm helping a friend of mine with a 3.1 and another with a 3.4 who is also doing a 215 swap.

The 60* Ford is also an option, no-one makes
a kit for it, but it's fairly straight forward
if you've the ability, the 302 is doable but
there are things that will drive you nutty, the
oil filter is the biggest issue, it needs to be
a remote, but no kits are going to work, it's a
truely custom piece. I know of one that has a set
of headers on it, the headers cost more than the
rest of the swap, but the manufacturer of them should
be able to knock out a set without the car being in
the shop... Ping me if you want to know who to get in
touch with...

V6 conversion inquiry

How is the performance of a 2.8 60 degree V6 Chevrolet in a MGB? Would it take off like a IROC Z, or is it mild mannered?

I would like a tire burner. I know a V8 small block chevy with all the performance goodies would do the job, but I guess the install would be a bitch into a MGB. Schneider Cams stated 220 hp is pretty high for the 60 degree V6 chevy, and I have read about a $18,000 350hp dirt track Midget race engine. Do you think the 2.8 can push you back in your seat like a high performance sports car? Does a 200hp 1500 lbs. MGB accelerate like a 400hp 3000 lbs. 427 Vette?

Thanks!

Re: V6 conversion inquiry

I was gonna do the swap, but then someone mentioned that the differential wouldn't hold up under all that torque. Rather than going with a new diff/rear axle I abandoned the project.

Re: V6 conversion inquiry

The rear end will hold up unless try to break it and then you might be able to. My engine has 160 HP and 210 TQ aprox. It will get 0-60 in the 4-5 sec range and top speed would be around 125 MPH redline limited. It's a quick little car, I can chirp the tires shifting to 4th gear if I try. It's not really the kind of power to pin you to your seat but it will go pretty fast. There is definitely a traction issue, and the only way that will be fixed is with going with some wider tires. The 3.1 is a stroked 2.8 engine and a 3.4 is a bored 3.1 so all of them are interchangeable with each other with the 3.4 making the most power of course.

V8/V6 conversion inquiry

What is the performance potential of the 215 BOP/Rover V8 vs. 2.8/3.4 60 degree V6? Do each have comparable torque? Which one is better suited to rev to 7000 rpm with available performance parts?

Thanks!
Jamie

Re: V8/V6 conversion inquiry

There are lots of performance parts for the V6 and it is much easier to make more HP and TQ with the V6. Also, they are cheep and easy to come by.

Hi All. I am interested in putting a V8 into my 72 B. Does the Rover V8 fit straight in. Do I have to fit the Rover gear box or will the B one fit. Do I have to change the diff. Can anyone help. Is there any more modifactions I have to do. Is the suspension in the B ok for the V8 or does it have to be changed. Regards John.

Just keep the four cyclinder and have fun cruising. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If Tony trusts his engine builder, so do I:

"Made a trip to Cheswold, Delaware to pick up my Glenn Towry-built Rover 4.2L engine. What a beauty; and, Glenn and his engine guy swear I'll make 300 horsepower at the flywheel (and, probably 300 pounds of torque also!)"

Good luck with the GRM car!

You could call Fast Cars Inc at 269-792-6632 ( western Michigan). He does conversions and they look professionally done. He also has a trick front axle to go with it. In fact, he is having a group of MG V8 owners to his shop Sat., Jan. 22nd.

Have you driven one? Seems to me its a big step to take in-the-dark.

Does anyone have experience with Moss's supercharger on a B?
