Keoke: That would have been about 1978. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I was a horse show photog and also raised Arabs. In our horse club we raced mixed breeds, that is a race might have a half Arab, a Paint and a Quarter Horse fo example. These were just fun races, of course. Our race course was more than an eighth, less than a quarter mile. Most of the time if we had a Quarter Horse in the pack, it won. Of course we also had a few Appies with a good deal of Quarter in them and one in particular could keep up with the Quarters and sometimes was a winner. But my point was that good looks (at least in horses) is not really as important as ability. So to answer the question, that would be about 1978 when I had to stop fooling with horses due to a really bad nerve disease by the name of Myasthenia Gravis (M.G.) that sapped my strength to a point where I was almost in a wheelchair. I was lucky and recovered 75% of my strength. Most don't. Now the only M.G. I have is my B! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well Guinn, by 1978 the breed had probably been ruined.
Much earlier the US government confiscated all Appaloosas, forbid breeding of them for years even the Native Americans in spite of their sovereignty were not allowed to breed them. WHY? Cuz the finest US Calvary horses could not beat AN APPALOOSA. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

We now turn Basil's forum back to the MG---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Absolutely right! And the breed disappeared as a breed but was brought back by one man, virtually alone, in the early thirties. He bred the spotted nags that were left to Arabs and Quarter Horses and came up with horses that exemplified the best of all those breeds. I have forgotten his name. Guess I must be getting old (80).

Tried to find the man's name just now by typing Modern Appalossa into Google. I didn't find it but got this interesting site: newrider.com/Specialisms/Western/Breeds/western_appaloosa.html. We have strayed a bit off the track but horses are interesting, too! My neighbor restores old Willys Knight cars AND raises Paints.

Keoke- great pic of the dart, that color really rocks and the 72 spoke chrome wires just sparkle. I saved it as a restoration inspiration on the '62. Thanks for defending the beast, there's a pic of mine in car shows section taken yesterday on a fun-run. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Well Dart, I like to think ,there are no ugly cars, just ugly restorations.---Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
