USS United States

Never cruised. Never would. We have not, for forty years or more, entered crowded places if it could be avoided. Leisure has mostly consisted of individualized outdoor recreation. Covid reinforced the crowd avoidance bent. Last year, we gambled on the Coconut Grove Orchid Show. You guessed it; COVID again within days.

As always, different horses for different courses. We have a cruise booked in feb - in part because it goes through the Panama Canal. We have many different travel plans in retirement but do enjoy a cruise - typically on smaller ships. (in fairness the first cruise we have taken since covid and I am immune having had it a month ago and being well immunized)

Going on one in January.I DO NOT want to go,
but since it's out Son's wedding,I know I'll never
heard the end of it if I don't

Cruises certainly seem to be a love/hate type of thing. I enjoy them (even on the newer ships) because you can just do as much or as little as you want - spending a whole day on the back deck with cigars and frozen drinks suited me just fine but I have relatives who would go absolutely crazy doing "nothing". I like having some time without dealing with other people, but even on the newer Carnival ship it was surpisingly easy to find an uncrowded location where you could just sit and chill watching the waves go by. I'll go again at some point, but I can certainly see the viewpoint of people who hate the idea of being on a ship in the middle of the ocean feeling like time is just being wasted.

I just had a memory of going back to the ship in Cozumel and sitting with a cigar watching a ferry being unloaded and loaded - like a puzzle making everything fit (tetris?) one of the best uses of a couple hours I could possibly imagine. BTW the cruise itself (IIRC 5 day) cost $69 each. All in the family was $600. Probably the best deal I have ever had for great service good food and lovely shows. :D

$69/person for a 5 day cruise? Yikes - must have been just after the founding of Quebec in 1608!
:jester:
sadly October 2002 - post 9/11 the tourism industry was hammered.

Hadn't thought to remark on this, but the USS United States has apparently been sold and sometime next year will be sunk off Florida to be a reef. I suppose a better end than as razor blades, as they used to say was done with scrap.

That was when ships actually looked like ships.

Two ships - built around 80 years apart.

I had a couple cruses, but they weren't much fun! Us in the middle, Tin Can on the left and a big boy on the right! Didn't cost me a dime, actually I got paid for the trip! I think it was a dollar a day.
