Use of "Jam Nut" on Rocker Arm Tappets

The jam nuts on my rocker arm look too worn or rounded, so I have new ones from Moss.

Is there a top or bottom??

How do these things actually work?

Usually no top or bottom, but look to see if one side is rounded or has a raised round area. The rounded side would go up, the raised side would go down.

Just an ordinary nut, really, except for somewhat thinner. Same principle as double-nutting a stud to install it, the threads in the nut fight against the threads in the rocker arm and lock the adjuster from turning.

Stainless is too soft for this application. And the whole area is bathed in oil constantly. Rust is not an issue.

Sure. I've used hardware store nuts in a pinch. But they are taller than the original jam nuts, and look funny. Probably add undesirable reciprocating mass to the valve train as well.

I guess your right. Real important in those see thru valve covers.
