Upgrading ignition questions.

my '79 has the original Hall effect sensor that came with the car. I'm thinking about upgrading, as my stock Lucas coil seems weak. Has anyone any experience with the new pertronix 60KV coils? They're not a lot of money, and with a new sensor
methinks it should run smoother and start easier. Any opinions? Also, any suggestions for a new dizzy?

I had Jeff at Advance Distributor rebuild and recurve the one in my B and the change was tremendous! It's pretty inexpensive too. In that car, I'm also running a Petronix Flamerthrower II with a Lucas Sports coil.

When the time comes I'll definitely send him my spridget Dizzy.

Here is his site:

I'm sorry, ahpook, not to be disrespectful, but I simply find it very hard to believe that you have an original 1979 hall effect ignition system on your car. Generally those things lasted 2 to 5 years. I haven't seen one in working condition since the late 80's. Please excuse me.

As for the Pertronix, I've heard very good things about them, though I don't use one myself. That is definately the way to go at this time.

Personally I have a Luminition on my Land Rover, which incidentally is left over from the time when we used to change all those defective Lucas systems. (The sprite doesn't run right now)

If you do have the original ignition system, get rid of it. Those were notoriously unreliable, although the '79 may have come with the CEI and not the Opus it eventually replaced. Mine gave up the ghost long ago and I replaced it with a Pertronix. Still running with the stock coil, but it works fine for me.

no disrespect taken. I'm just assuming, since I got the car with 45k on it, and put another 90k on it, and I've never touched the dizzy or the coil in that whole time. Now I've got a very weak spark, even with new plugs, wires, rotor and cap. I figure it's either the coil or the pickup...and yeah, it's an Opus. Am I just lucky, or what? That brings up the question, how long do pertronix type components last?
