Hi All -
Just thought I'd report in. Got my car back and running after a 1.5 yr delay. A buddy & I installed a new Weber 32/36 setup and it runs GREAT !! This is the single unit (downdraft as it is refered to) with 2 'barrells' to feel fuel to the (included) manifold then to the engine.
I was able to fishtail corners and actually experienced something called acceleration. I always thought my SU's were fine - maybe I just don't know what I am doing with the rebuild / tuning of them (maybe is kind).
Some general comments ....
Had to modify the spring return(S) for the pedal / accelerator cable. This took some time, but runs great now. Idles smooooothly at lights (previously would either stall or I'd had to rev it up - heating the engine beyond 190 degrees).
Solved prior problems of A) run-on (choke on one of the SU's was sticking and I did not realize) and B) idle - now very steady at lights (short ot long) and C) Accelleration was lacking (didn't know I really had a problem until the new setup was on and working) -- A BIG DIFFERENCE.
I mulled over buying a rebuilt set from someone like Hap (& I am confident he would have done a wonderful job) vs. going new. I decided on the new one simply because I could get it right away and assumed a rebuild of what I had would take more time and was already down for nearly 18 mths. I also believe the Weber will have better parts availablity for decades to come and more people are familiar with it. It's actually quite simple.
Also - in my neck of the woods the local "MG Guy" has been out of commission due to health reasons and anyone else is 1 hour drive (and the car is not driveable). Most importantly - asking anyone on the 2 clubs I belong to regarding SU help got the same response as if I was asking to borrow money. I now don't have the "black art" issue of the SU's.
The worse of the project was that it had no directions (Weber included the 1500 directions and I have the 1275). Made a call to the tech support and sent a few pic's and was able to get things straightened out pretty quick.
Net / net: A BIG DIFFERENCE !!! The car is peppy and smooth where it was not before. Let me get more than 30 miles on it before I recommend it - but I can't imagine not being happy.
