The bin men!

We put everything we're done with on th' curb, they take it away. Nasty stuff! Th' remains of th' Christmas turkey, used cat litter, rags from cleaning Heaven-knows-what off the floors, old used car bits, you name it... You bag it, they drag it.

KUDOS to them!!!

Recycle our old car bits here . Nuts, bolts metal engine parts. All picked up the the bi-weekly recyclers

They take almost everything I toss - even 20 old 4' flourescent bulbs! Sheetrock, wood, corrugated tin, non of it deters them....tree limbs, grass, brush clippings all go in the truck.

But they won't take old paint, tires & shingles.

They are <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT </span>suppose to take Fl. bulbs
You know why

Never mind,,you live in Alabama. :jester:

That's what Diesela's for: We load any of that stuff into her boot and to th' local "dump". They have the bins for all the REALLY "toxic" stuff.

When I was a kid, a pair of trash guys would ride holding on to the back of the garbage truck. They'd hop off as the truck slowed, walk into our backyard, get the cans and bags, deposit the stuff into the truck and bring the cans back to the backyard. Couple years later, they'd pull the cans outta backyard, but would leave them at the curb. Then we had to bring the cans to the curb and retrieve them. Now (here in L.A.) it's one guy in a truck with a grappling arm. I'm not saying anything bad about these guys, just noting how things change. Guess before all that, we would have burned stuff in the backyard, oh wait, we did that too.

jeez you guys are lucky, around here we have to recycle cardboard, paper, cans, coffee cups etc etc, and compost cat litter, all foodstuffs, dog hair, shredded paper etc etc. Everything else goes in the garbage except for part full paint cans, tv's computers, batteries, empty propane tanks etc go to the hazardous waste site(I have to take it). Any steel or sheet metal or cast iron go to the scrap metal yard (I have to take it also which is ok as they always have a few cars I can hunt about, last time they had a vauxhall victor a couple of jags and a citroen) We are limited to 2 garbage bags every 2 weeks or buy tags for any extra at a buck a tag. He always gets a 6 pack of beer at christmas except for this year 'cause he really ticked me off. I had 6 bags of which 4 were tagged, he took 2 of the tagged ones and left the rest,I collared him on the way back and he told me the driveway was too icy(he had already walked in to the driveway and took 2 tagged)so I carried them out and threw them in the truck, it wasn't too icy for this 63 year old but it was for somebody in their 20's. Don't get me started, OOPS I think I already did.

I thought the same thing, Don...I put all the old bulbs in the boxes from which the new bulbs came & when the truck arrived, I went out to ask if I needed to take the bulbs to the dump myself but the said "nope" & tossed them in the truck!

Oh, I was changing out all the bulbs in my workshop. That's why I had 20 of them.

weewillie, we have 2 different types of garbage/trash pickup: our normal garbage pickup which is 1 guy hanging off the truck that has a grappling hook to pick up the supplied can....but, they'll pick up more without extra charge. When I was cleaning out the attic of the GarageMahal for the studio apartment we're building, I had 3 cans with about 40 cardboard boxes, some also full.....they loaded everything up.....my regualr garbage collectors were the ones who took the flourescent bulbs......regular garbage collection is all we pay for - regardless of how much we put out, its always a set monthly amount.

Then, we have the 'big stuff' collection....they come around with a truck towing a big dumpster (about 30' long) with a huge grappling arm....they take everything else (tree limbs, brush cuttings, wood, sheetrock, metal, old TV's, stereos, computers - you name it....anything except paint, old tires, and shingles).....also a free service unless you have a dumpster load; then you notify them, pay a $40 fee, and they send it out specially for your load.

We also have the recycling truck that comes by to pick up the provided blue recycling bins we set out with our recyclables. Also a free service.

Thank goodness I live in Alabama!

Sort of on the subject...just saw a segment about the recycling business on the tube last nite. I think its factual as I have a friend here in town that has said the same thing...prices for steel and other things has fallen so low that it costs more to buy and bale it than they can sell it for. The yard there is now the highest elevation in the county...what an eyesore. And back when steel was high this summer, they bought more than they could bale and ship so now they got stuck with it....BUT...have no fear, I'm sure our new presidente will bail them out....

Our recycling cost big dollars. Not mandatory but god forbid if you don't do it.

Tony- Around here you can't get within 1000feet of a trash truck, refuge yard ,or transfer station with tubes. Men in the silver suits take them

That would be south, though, I could go north. Just a lot longer.
