With the shock absorbers disconneted, and the suspension at full droop, how much torsion is left in the torsion bars?

Can the reaction plate be unbolted safely at this point, or is there still tosrion in the bars?

Don't do it. I really don't know how much preload it has but relative to finger, hands, arms and eyes, a heck of alot.

If it is anything like a 150, my son picked up the front end (no motor or transmission) with one side when trying to get at something in the suspension. He did not go further and is waiting for info before another attempt.

Get yourself a Haynes Manual that covers E types.
The process is pretty clearly described in the manual.
It all works easily - if you have no rust!
Good Luck

Thanks guys, my manual is on it's way, but I'm just curious at this point.

Can someone give me the 2 cent summary of teh procedure?

I disconnect the tie rod ends and the shock absorbers to remove more of the load. But lately I go ahead and disconnect the lower ball joint because by now most of the E-Types need the torsion bars reset.
