Unlisted Phone Numbers

Why do people have them?

I ask everybody who orders from me to provide me their shipping address & phone number (FEDEX asks for it in the event they can't find the address)....invariably, people from California (primarily - but other states occassionally) do not provide their phone number & when I go to the operator or white pages.com, I'm told its "not available"....so, it delays me shipping their parts until I can email them & get a phone number in return! Then I get the blame for the parts not getting there on time.

I mean, why?

Telemarketers, axe murderers, crazed fans... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Seriously though, some people just prefer their privacy rather than anyone who wants to being able to bother them at home.

Telemarketers I would agree with you about, Steve - but its called the "National Do Not Call List"....nobody calls me except those to whom I want to speak!

Don't believe axe murderers call for an appointment....hehehehe

Works for me! I never get any except occassionally from business with whom I already do business & once I tell them not to call back, they don't.

I always think a person with an unlisted number is dodging creditors or ex-wives or something like that....I know its wrong to think like that, but..........

You will eventually. We're on the "Do not call" list as well, and get all sorts of junk calls. If there's the slightest delay after I answer (usual tipoff that it's a computer generated call), I hang up. Regardless. If someone really needs to talk to me, he or she will call back.

I get the same thing Tony. I also get supposed business owners requesting product information without any information from them to show a legitimate business. Add to that the e-mails are in extremely poor grammar and the spelling is atrocious. It does make a distinct mental image of who I am dealing with.

I've got an unpublished number. It's not available to directory assistance, whereas unlisted only means it's not in the book.
It, in conjunction with the "No Call" list, has greatly reduced my junk calls.

How about this perspective Tony...

I used to work as a field tech for a photo equipment company. I had around 500 clients covering most of Oregon and Washington.

I have ALWAYS been of the opinion that when the whistle blows I am off the clock. I will bend over backwards to help someone if they are completely 'down' and unable to produce product and make money. If someone is down I will be there as soon as humanly possible and will (and have) work 36 hours straight to get them back in business. BUT. With that many people there are too many times that someone will call and want something fixed over the phone by me when they are still able to make product and they think they can just call me any time instead of going through the normal 'company' channels which were manned 24/7. If you go through the proper channel then the people on company time can make the judgement call if this is something that needs my body on-site- if that is the case then they will contact me any time day or night and I will be there.

THAT is why my number is unlisted. People who know me get the number. People who don't need it don't.

Our number's unlisted, because we were getting calls
with the person making obscene remarks, then hanging up.
I'll give my number out when I know who it's going to.
I won't give out someones unlisted number until I check with them first.

The do not call list doesn't work. I'm on it and I still get calls from 3 or 4 telemarketers daily.

Ditto - doesn't work for me either! When I start to tell them I'm on it, they abruptly hang up.

My number is unlisted because I teach 13 year olds. I do not want them to call me at home at 10:00 the night before a major project is due. I do not want parents calling me at home to discuss thier child's grades etc. I also do not want to deal with the occasional "prank" calls that invariably occur when a group of 13 year old girls get together for a sleep over.I wish to avoid the hassle of having to use the caller ID to call their moms and get them in trouble)
I know this sounds bad but teaching can absorb your entire life if you let it. I have two boys (three if you count my husband) to raise and I have had to learn to leave school at school. Its easier to keep it unlisted and keep my private life private.

That's why I have such restrictive spam filters - sometimes too restrictive but its cut my emails down from over 300 a day to around 100.

& you guys have given me several real good reasons not to publish your phone number:

...so when you're off work, you're off work
...so students & parents don't bother you late at night (though when I taught high school I didn't have the problem - & one of my old students who is now 27 & a father just got back from Iran & he, his wife & 17-month old son just spent 3 hours visiting)
....obscene phone calls

I SURRENDER!!

But it sure would help if I had the phone number to ship parts (though I did type 000-000-0000 in the space for pnohe number & FEDEX processed the label!!)

Its also a good reason to NEVER post your phone number on a forum (except in a PM) or on a web page.

See, I even have my phone number on my web site...but have an answering machine with caller ID.

I have caller ID too, but I hate getting up to answer the phone when it's a solicitor or telemarketer and I'm trying to enjoy dinner with the family. Too each his own, but it bugs the heck out of me.

Ringing phones don't bother me at all....if I don't want to answer it, I let the machine do it for me - I suppose even as an old [censored], I'm still learning "different strokes for different folks"...

Hehe, is nice, when I call Tony to chat I get Tony.

No unwanted calls here, National list for the win.

We basically shut our phones off after 5 in the evening by directing all calls to the answering machine and it's volume is turned off while receiving calls. If the light is on in the morning, we check the messages then. The family and friends call us on our cell phones after 5. No one else has those numbers. Works for us!

In your case, Tony, when you request a number for an order being placed with you, one would think that (listed number or not) the person you are dealing with for their LBC parts would be MORE than anxious to hear from you and give you their number!!! I mean it's not like you are going to broadcast it or make crank calls or something!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif
