Unleaded gas conversion

I run 87 octane lead free gas in my 72 MGB and it has the stock head with the stock valve seats. Re done in 2005, it runs great with no issues. Unless a car is a daily driver as a family car, driven 7 days a week, fill it with regular gas and go! If your compression ratio is elevated and it pings, put in the next higher octane. Too much emphases is placed on cast valve seats going bad! Lead additives only do one thing, make the manufacturer richer! Their worthless! Old saying, put something in print and people will believe anything! How true, how true. Drive it, enjoy it and stop worrying about it!

I agree, unless you are doing high milages the wear will be negligible.
I have used standard petrol in all my non modified engines over the past 10 years with no problems.

Eric,
I hate to pile on but I commonly have shifted my Healey at around 5K RPM for decades and highways cruse at around 75 MPH or so. My compression has been increased, out of stupidity in the late 60s (when I arrogantly insisted I knew what I was talking about when I told the machinist to shave the head 0.060” in error rather then 0.006” I wanted) so I run the highest pump high octane at the any convenient station without a ping or miss and see no reason to add Lead additives. At this point, I have no intention to pull the head and, unless something happens to require an engine rebuild, will continue and leave well enough alone.

Although some are using additives or have rebuilt their heads with new hardened seats, valves, guides, etc. I can not say this is not a good idea.

Good luck,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Special seats and valves are new to me. I though you just needed new guides.

Yep it takes the whole 9 YDs. But if you do not drive your car hard forget the additives and use unleaded gasoline highest octane in your area.

Thx for all the feedback fellas. I have had my BJ7 20 yrs. w/restoration (cosmetic) done just before I got her. Since then
new gas tank, water pump, generator, starter, radiator, spin on oil, shocks, electronic ign.,you name it.
i want to leave the car as I legacy for my 17 yr son, who works on her with me and is good son. Just want to leave it as bullit proof as possible. We need younger generations to carry on with these cars and make new history & memories with them. Sorry for the ramble.
High test from now on (as before) w/o additive.
