Understanding Weber DCOE identifiers?

Our Yellow BE has a 40DCOE on (for decades, now) on its 948 cc engine, and I've got 4 or 5 DCOEs (running from 'parts only' to 'hopefully useful). I'm slowly understanding some of the labelling, but remain completely buffaloed as to the number after '40DCOE'. I understand it references a 'series', but have no idea what that means. I'm assuming that it has something to do with a 'series' with the same venturis & jets etc etc and is otherwise not meaningful, but would surely appreciate some advice on this one. Thanks, Doug
