TR4/4A Uncle's TR4

Hi Everyone,

I have been lurking for awhile now. I ran into my uncle at a family party a few weeks ago and remembered that he might still have the TR4I I remember him having probably 20 years ago now. Turns out he still has it and it has been moved between his garage and outside for 20 years. I am in the midst of unearthing it. I just wanted to get everyone's take on it. It is in pretty sad shape but I am thinking about getting from him to restore so it stays in the family. Since I am not sure how to post photos yet. I provided a link to my flickr account below.

Not a problem. I do like the lines on the 4's. That is going to be quite a project, maybe you could get your uncle to do it and then turn over the keys.
 
How are the floors and rocker panels? Any major signs of rust?

Does it have overdrive?

Hi Scott,

From what I can tell the floors and rockers look ok but will know more when I pull it out of the garage this week. I am not sure if it has overdrive or not.

I suppose "pretty sad shape" is a: in the eye of the beholder and b: quite dependent on geography. Here in the Northeastern US rust belt, that's almost "factory new" compared to some of the rustbuckets of that vintage we've had to deal with since the late 1960s (cars bought new and used year-round)!

Look for the commission number: it should be CTxxxxxL. If there is an "O" after that L, it had overdrive from the factory. It might be wishful thinking on my part, but it almost looks as if there's a short chrome lever sticking out the RH side of the steering column, opposite the turn signal lever. That would be the overdrive switch and would be a very good sign (although not a guarantee that there is still an OD gearbox at the other end of the wiring).
