Uh oh, he's thinking again...

So, I had an idea. And after the smoke dectector went off and all returned to normal..... I was given a pile of parts here, right around Christmas. I got a 1275, and a trans, some new MGB front shocks, 3 MGA roadster seats, MGA top frame, and the cheapie universal MGA side curtains. Normally, I would just put all of this on Ebay, but IMO Ebay just ain't what it used to be. So (this is where I made my head smoke with the idea)I like sprigets, ( owned 17 at once with a buddy of mine)I have a nice 1275, oil cooler kit, and a few other bits, and I have all this other Carpola cluttering up my life (Tri. Bonneville project, Sun Distributor machine Early TR3 OD trans, and much much more), how about I try to build a complete running driving car without actually spending any out of pocket cash. Can it be done?? Can I horse trade away enough clutter to actually put a whole car together?? What do you all think?? If nothing else, it ought to make a good story, and it might clean out my shop. So I'd like some feed back before I totally commit to this. I have thick skin, so don't be afraid to comment.
Thanks,
Jesse

I think you can, depending on how much "Carola" you have. But you need to decide what direction you want to go ie what car do you want to end up with. How about a special using the 1275 bits etc.

Well:
Where are you now?
If you sell the stuff and make a car, then HOORAY!
If you don't, you're where you are now.
No lose either way.
Go for it.
And I want to see pictures of the car you build!

That crossed my mind too.Build a car with "as found" parts. I amnot much of a welder though, and there isthe small matter of a frame. I have 3 Jag V12s, front and rear subframes... A giant lotus 7 would be a hoot. But that project is going to have to wait for another day. This just seems like a fun project to try, and I get 2 distinct benefits. A Spriget ( or a minor maybe??) and an uncluttered shop. Everybody else gets things they want.

Hey, if a guy can turn a red paperclip into a house, you should be able to trade, swap or barter a mosh pit of car parts into a complete and running one! As I understand it, Craigslist was supposed to be a barter/swap site at first. I say go for it...it WILL make a good story if nothing else.

I would say you could easily do it.

It depends on if you want to or not....but if you want to, it's easy.

I cant think of a better candidate than LBC cars- parts so darned interchangeable your halfway there already! I say go for it.

The Jag front subframes are waaay WIDE... but a V-12 would be a grand mill as a mid-engine chassis candidate.
Fob off as much as ya can for cash, get some tubing and knit up a chassis!!

Sounds a bit like that Johnny Cash song- the one where the factory worker built his Caddilac using bits swipped piece by piece over twenty years or so....

"One Piece At A Time". They actually built a car to look like the Frankenstein from the song.

I like this idea best, but I can't figure out a transaxle for a mid engined sports car with big power, short of something from a Ferrari or suchlike, which of course isn't British. Wonder if there's a Hewland LG 500 or Mk. IV lurking under a bench somewhere, free to a good home?

Next, of course, is how to clothe such a thing!
