As long as I have the tunnel off I was considering replacing the u-joints. Am I opening another can of worms? Any body had one go on them? There is a slight amount of play. I see Moss has them for 12.95

Couldn't agree more. I suffered a Ujoint failure on the way to Tahoe. Made it home, but lots of vibrations and wondering if the drive shaft was going to find its way into the cockpit. BTW, we were able to find a spare at a Car Quest in a small town in Utah, that really surprized me.

They are fairly easy to change if you have a decent size vice, just don't let those needles fall out!

I am sure that you must be familiar with the concept of "preventive maintenance". Kind of like replace questionable parts before they fail & leave you stranded.

Probably part of the reason for the poor reliability of LBC's is not fixing it until it breaks.

Always do preventive maintenance on a part/assembly when already working "in the area". Especially where it is greasy, yucky, tight clearance, hard to get at, etc. If you plan to keep a vehicle and use it, it will eventually need to be replaced and doing it when already there will save a lot of grief - my two cents!

The last time I did that, I didn't stop until I had the whole car apart.

Ok...rephrase to "always strongly consider doing..." versus "always do"....... I know what you mean, if you really did strictly go with "always do" it would never end!!!
 
I will at least order a pair. I will give replacing them a shot next weekend. They are as old as I am. I wish I could replace my U-joints heheheheheheh
 
If there is play in the joint, it is bad. If you see red rust stains around the seal area, it is bad. If you have the driveshaft out, and the joint hangs slightly, it may be bad(rapping the flange with a hammer may reset the joint) if not, it is bad. My advice, replace them. Joints are easy to change and cheap. The cost of replacement probably less than the flatbed ride when they break.
 
Got em in!! Yea another little victory and a darn good thing I replaced these. I am suprised they hadn't gone on me.
