U-joints- quick question

Got my engine back from the machinist this week. Besides the engine, the transmission and overdrive have been rebuilt. Now I'm looking at the U-joints and thinking 'should I?' They show no signs of play and I don't want to just throw money away. Are they a pain to replace after the engine/trans are back in place?

MH67, I just did mine on my BJ7. Spent most of a Saturday doing them. You have to pull up your complete interior and remove the transmission tunnel to get to the front u-joint. So when do you think is a good time??? I never put something used back in that I can't get to immediately. Let me ask you this, HOW OLD ARE THEY? Answer: DON'T KNOW, don't use them.

Hello MH,
I know some well thought of people suggest that you should not replace universal joints without having the shaft re-balanced.
I, personally, do replace them but always mark the two halves so they can be assembled the same orientation. (And don't balance them after.)
I've been doing these for years but if it's a first time it can be tricky.

You actually don't have to remove the console and tunnel, at least on a BJ8. You can reach the nuts through the access cover intended for greasing the U joint. I just did mine two weeks ago. It helps to have skinny fingers, a curved wrench, and a long punch to knock back the lock tabs. The bolt heads are half moon style so they won't turn.
