U-joint replacement?

TR6...What is the recommended way to get at the drive shaft u-joints? I've been under the car trying to carefully remove the exhuast for access but can't seem to separate the pipes without damaging them.
 
I believe it's the same as my TR4 where I had to take out the seats and carpet to remove the trans cover to get to the forward nuts and bolts. You should have a hole in your cover to give access to yours but mine was a replacement cover that did not have the window.
