Doug - my view: they're for lonely people, people who need an audience, people who don't want to deal with reality.

Welcome to Demolition man's future, travel, exercise, and social interaction is going to be done completely via the computer. For all of you young parents out there...the day is coming when your daughter announces she is virtually knocked up. And the avatar won't marry her.

My sage ol' mum said back in the early '70's: With the development of computers, humans would devolve into a pile of protoplasm with one digit... the one to push the FOOD button. Were she alive today, I'm sure her observation of this "childhood obesity" pandemic would lead her to conclude the devolution has begun.

Doc - wasn't it the movie Wall-E, where the humans ride around in electric carts, sipping from oversize sugary drinks, watching each other on screens and texting each other. But none actually talk to each other.

I must say that I enjoy Facebook. I have found a number of old friends from HS and College, and have been able to promote the museum where I volunteer to a number of new fans too, and I used it to find a number of High School classmates for our last class reunion. I do not read every friend's post, just as I don't read every thread here. It is just a way to stay in touch with friends who have varied interests...

Hopefully it does not mean I am lonely, but I sure don't feel that way.

Yeah, I agree with Dave. I find some of this social media has added to my life.

In all honestly, my general concept of Facebook (and its useage) is similar to British Car Forum. They are both social media formats. It's hard to see how you could like one and be confused by the other. Twitter is similar, but I don't really need to "keep up" with folks that often.

To me, Twitter is like the telephone.....it ties me up too long, when I'd rather be driving or working on my cars. If I'm going to spend that much time with someone, I'd rather meet them face-to-face.

Lady Gaga is sort of a non-sequitur in this conversation.

I have some old friends that I'd see once every year or two. Now, with several forums and Facebook, I can keep up with them weekly or monthly.....it's fun.

And I trust the irony of the location of this conversation is not lost on anyone. (shhhhh. British Car Forum is Social Media and you betcha I don't want to deal with reality - that's why I have an LBC)
  :computer: :jester:

Not lost at all, JP. Whole innernet thingie is a social media platform, starting with bulletin boards and Pine. Then newsswervers. Praise Cesium!!

The webbish part is all Tim B-L's fault. :smirk:

Reluctantly, I have a Facebook account.

Yep, irony is oft delicious!

Unless its brussels sprouts, then there is the chance of tasting of too much like irony.

That was my first thought. I'm not a fan of Twitter (or Lady nonsense), but "Facebook" is really nothing different than the "Pub" here - except you have more control over the content.

Yeah...I have a Facebbok page, too. Don't spen a lot of time on it but it's an easy way to keep up with a few "lost" friends. Anyone here who's interested can find me on FB by looking for Gary Beu .
