The lone Survivor Tree stands quiet guard,
A chain link fence defends the sacred ground,
Mementos left to lives forever scarred,
Foreboding sense of death looms all around.
Our fundamental hopes and dreams were shaken,
The innocent, the babes, the frail, the strong,
The hundred sixty-eight whose lives were taken,
Extinguished by a zealot’s deed so wrong.
But Oklahoma City stood with pride,
Example set for all to emulate,
We’ll not succumb to terror, run or hide
Subdued by such a senseless act of hate.
We cover not with shame our solemn face
But pride to consecrate this hallowed place.

Sadly we remember this (and the Waco Siege also this date) because it is also my daughter's birthday - and tomorrow Columbine (Hitler's Birthday)

:( so much pain so much sorrow so much stupidity

I remember it well.

...let us pray for them all.

I never went back there as I don't wish to see where the building stood. Like Walter, I remember it well. The lone surviving tree stands for all that was lost and may it always remain, reminding us of all that died that day, but will never be forgotten. PJ

I've been to the memorial a couple of times, the thing that really makes me get a bit teary eyed are the small chairs. If you have never seen the memorial there is a lawn that has a chair for each victim of the bombing and for the children there are nineteen smaller chairs.

That has to be heart breaking. I walked down in front of the WALL in DC one time and it took me 3 times to finish it. I don't think I could keep myself composed looking at those little chairs. Kinda chokes me up just thinking about them.

I bet you can't walk through that place and come out with a dry eye. Kinda chokes me up now just typing about it.
