Turn Signals

Just found this site and it looks very useful!

I just completed a major restoration of a 1974 MGB. We did the bodywork and new brakes, clutch, fuel lines, etc. The engine ran so I left that to last (which is 1 of the 2 problems). I have 2 problems I'm trying to figure out.

1) The left turn signal works when the lights are off and when the parking lights are on but not when the headlights are on. Interesting. Also, the right turn signals flash quickly while the left ones flash very slowly (when they actually do flash). Any thoughts on this one?

2) The second problem is that the car seems to run well below 30 mph but as it tries to go past that it backfires and just doesn't get up any more speed even in 4th. Probably a tuneup would help. Any thoughts here would be great also.

thanks

Welcome the to the forum! The last of the CB B's is a pleasure to own.

I would recommend that you swap out the fuse box (a minor job) and check all bulbs and grounds...sounds like a combination of things with your wiring and this should get you at least pointed in the right direction.

A would also recommend that you do a complete tune up. While it sounds like a carburation problem, it most likely is your points, and a simple tune up is in order anyhow. New points plugs and condensor, set the timing and then balance the carbs, if necessary. While the older SU's needed constant attention, it has been my experience that the HIF's keep in synch much better and seldom cause problems that were common with the older carbs.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. Replacing the fuse box makes a lot of sense. I know the contacts can cause problems.

The MGB was built very near the end of the CB production run. It's about 6,000 short of the final VIN number for
chrome bumper cars.
