Traditional flashers are thermal/current actuated switches. Because of that, if you have the wrong light bulbs installed (too many or too few Watts) then the flasher will operate at the "wrong" speed or not at all.
Does your car use the 3-terminal or 2-Terminal flasher? On 3-terminal installations, one terminal is specifically to drive a single dash mounted indicator light. I have see a couple of different wiring schematics for the 2-terminal flashers.
