Thanksgiving's on the way. Lots of folks out there without much food in the pantry. Or for that matter, folks without pantries at all.

Today I donated a dozen turkeys to a local shelter.

How 'bout you?

That would be a cool Forum deal to get a lot of members together and donate.
Only problem would be who to?

I just returned from the supermarket. When I checked out, the screen told me I had enough points accumulated to get a certificate for a free turkey. I got the certificate and promptly donated it at the store (they have some sort of arrangement to distribute them).

My company sponsors a food and gift drive for local families in need. This is an annual affair and we always end up helping dozens of families with both food and gifts for the kids who would otherwise have coal in their stocking.

All right! Three responses!

Who's next ???????

Gonna drop mine off this afternoon:

On a serious note, there's a lot of need out there. As one who sees it daily, I'm glad there are folks willing to respond.

Thanks Mickey. These days are definitely not a time to just say "I gave at the office."

In 1996 I had seen a front page story in our local paper about the difficulty some native Americans have in finding adequate housing. The story featured a Navajo family in northeast Arizona with a 3 year old son who were living in the shell (just body, no frame) of a school bus. They slept on a dirt floor, had no running water, and used a wood stove for heat.

After several days of not being able to get them out of my mind, I went to the Salvation Army and asked if they would help me with a state-wide fund raiser to buy this family at least a used trailer. They did, we did and the family spent that winter not sleeping on the floor, but in a fairly decent (albeit small) trailer. It wasn't a palace, but it was a darned site better than sleeping on a dirt floor!

The Salvation Army has since been one of my favorite causes.

Basil - that is fantastic work. Congratulations on taking on that project, and giving us quite a model to emulate.

And now let's get more turkeys out to folks who need them!

We host an annual Austin Healey Christmas party at our home and sell raffle tickets for one or many items and then the club matches what we collect and off the check goes to provide our vets at the Albuquerque VA with gloves and tire repair items as the gloves prevent their hands from blistering and the hospital does not provide these items. Likewise our spring/summer party is given to a local children/family shelter program and our other car club collects for the local food bank at our annual holiday party. Truly we owners of LBC always seem to have money to give - just skipping our daily coffee adds up. I have learned that when you give, you always get it back two-fold. I consider myself truly blessed and giving makes me feel complete.

Thanks to all of you for what you do.

(At the risk of being too personal, as a young adult I received such kindness and it was a giving that was life changing for me.) :grouphug:

Now Agatha and I are going tooling.

basil/nutmeg, year round our local food bank closely monitors its inventory, when there is a shortfall of certain items i.e. canned fruit, soup, peanut butter, cereal, etc. they will hand out a list to customers entering many of our local food stores, they do this year round, they dont just wait till the holidays. my wife and her five sisters donate clothes to a program called DFS = dress for success, so women seeking employment will have attire suitable for thier job interviews, they donate year round, ive met too many people that say they will never give anything to any charity because "those people are solely to blame for the situation thier in", these non-givers have no concept of how a simple act of kindness and generosity can positively effect society as a whole, im trying to say that one should not only concider what they are willing and able to contribute to those in need but also be mindfull of the constant urgency of such. think about it, when we get hungry how many of us wait for a holiday to roll around before we eat something?.
