having a problem locating the ignition relay on a 1977 mgb roadster. bought a new one, but don't know where it is located

There are two relays on the right inner wing of the engine compartment. They are identical.

I believe the forward-most relay is the ignition relay.

I just had a problem where I needed to find the starter relay. By trial and error found it just where Rick said. YOur 77 should be the same as my 78.

Should it not be the one with a white/red trigger wire?

Not all '77s were fitted with ignition relays. If your car has an ignition relay, it will be located to the side of the fuse box. It looks like the starter relay with one exception, the starter relay has a white/red wire going to pin W1 and the ignition relay has a white wire going to pin W1. The way to tell if your car has an ignition relay is to look at the third fuse down. If the third fuse down on the fuse block has a white/brown wire connected to it, you have an ignition relay. If the third fuse has a white wire with no tracer color, you don't have an ignition relay.
If you don't have an ignition relay and want to install one, follow the wiring diagram for '78 and later at https://www.advanceautowire.com click on stock schematics.
