Trunk Troubles

Hey All -
Hope you had a great weekend - we finally got sun here in the NE - perfect weekend for an LBC ride.
I finally had a day to work on the B! Planned on replacing the trunk lid, as mine had cracked at the point where the prop-rod is mounted. I looked at both Victoria British and Moss, and the both list one lid for '62 through '80. I found one on eBay in really good shape for a song, and bought it. However, when I went to mount it yesterday, it didn't fit. It bolted to the hinges properly, but didn't close down. Contact was made at the center point, but not in line with the latch. Also, it gapped approx. 5/8" on either corner.
Specs - My B is a '76. This trunk was from an earlier model, as it had the holes for not only the MG Badge, but also th "M-G-B" emblem as used on earlier models.
SO - does this sound familiar to anyone? If there were any indication of misalignment or warping of the trunk lid, I could understand, and would have used persuasive methods /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif - but the gap is identical on either side of the trunk. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

One note - I removed the trunk seal from the vehicle, hoping that would help. It didn't. But researching now, I know that I should have removed the seal from the trunk lid itself. Could that possibly have made that much of a difference? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
