Trunk paint

Yea...I thought about doing it...I have LineX in my truck and it is indestructable. Some DPO used undercoating in my 74's trunk and to this day I would punch him in the head if I ever found him! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

In order to properly do the job, your boot will have to be clemically clean and spotless...a real LINE-X job will not be cheap, but you can buy a do it yourself kit (including prep materials and applicator rollers) which we have used to do the tub of one of our Jeeps.

Having said all that after considerable thought, I have decided that if I do go to all that trouble, I will likely decide to use POR15 and a topcoat of body color paint. It will look better and perhaps prevent me from being punched in the head by a subsequent owner /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

& down the road, it WILL devalue your car!

Carpet might be cheaper and it looks nicer imho. Might also be quieter and it can be removed for rust treatment if needed.

With carpet you can do a layer of foam underneath that is thick enough to organize spares and tools. (Just cutout appropriate shaped compartments in the foam.)

It may be tough stuff, but that exact property makes it inappropriate for the boot of a B. First, it weighs alot, second, should you ever wish to remove it...or anyone else, short of dynamite, it ain't going to happen.

Unless you plan on carrying loads of rock or firewood, forget it. It's great for a truck bed and that is where it belongs.

I've been thinking about going the carpet route on the blue 78....Trunks been undercoated(DPO job) and it seams to come off quite easily with a little varsol, but I am not sure how the paints going to be underneath all that. So instead of repainting the trunk I think I'll get a carpet kit for it. Anyone have any experience with these?

Yep. Ed Kaler is hosting some photos of my B's carpeted boot at www.justbrits.com. Here's one of the finished boot.

I made a couple of pieces that were not included in the kit. A local restoration shop matched the carpet for me. There is a false back (MDF) hiding a pair of 6x9 speakers and a masonite trunk floor. A couple of tips: work slow, use a heat gun (on low) to soften the backing, test fit/trim each piece, I used 3M 77 spray glue. Be REALLY careful trimming the carpet, I slipped with a utility knife and it cost me a trip to the emergency room to sew the tip of my finger back on.

Boy, nice looking job there.

Looks good Ed....How about the spare tire cover?
I installed a complete new Carpet kit in my MGA(from heritage upholstery) last summer, so I know all about the challenges of getting it to fit right.

I'm not Ed, he's just hosting my photos /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have the spare tire cover somewhere in the garage, but I have never used it, as I think the exposed wire wheel looks nicer.

Sorry, I knew you were Scott...for some reason I just typed "Ed".

No worries. I've been to Missisagua (sp?) a few times. The company I work for has an office there. I remember a place near the airport called the The Landing Strip /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif I know the place....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF
