Trueman Riviere Waller provided the deeper harmonies alongside the lighter toned Peter Asher in the 1960s pop duo Peter & Gordon. They started singing together while still at Westminster School and their first single, A World Without Love, topped the UK charts in April 1964. It was written by Paul McCartney who was then dating Peter's actress sister Jane. Over the next four years they released a string of singles including Nobody I Know, To Know You is to Love You, a reworking of an old Teddy Bears hit and a cover of Buddy Holly's True Love Ways. The duo split in 1968 and Gordon tried, unsuccessfully, to continue as a solo artist before pursuing a career in music publishing.

I saw this in The Times last week and was going to mention it, but I figured most folks might have Scott's reaction.

Peter Asher directed most of James Taylor's albums. Also, most of Linda Rohnstadt's, I'm pretty sure.

But even Peter always admitted that Gordon was always the better singer.
As you said Paul McCartney ghost-wrote many of their songs (including the one on the link above).

They tried to do a reunion tour in 2008, but apparently Gordon was not well enough to keep it going.
 
You could probably mention any number of singers from the 60s through 2009 and I'd probably have the same reaction :wink:
 
I too saw an announcement of his passing! I enjoyed them back in the day. An almost forgotten duo of the "British invasion". It is really amazing how many Top 10 hits they actually had! "Knight in rusty armour" was a memorable hit for me!
