Trouble with Rear End Removal

Help!

Everything is free except the bolt that holds the front left leaf spring. I got the nut off and it turns but it just won't budge for removal. BFH, PB Blaster... nothing has worked. The R/H side came out like a dream.

Any suggestions???

I had to cut mine out.

Try a little heat (MAPP gas, etc)...but beware of the chance of damage to the bushing if you are planning on re-using the same spring without any R&R

Are you talking about the bolt holding the leaf to the car? If so, lower the rear of the springs & roll the rear end off from the back of the car...then, you can get a little air saw up inside to cut the bolt - if you're planning on redoing the bushings.

Thanks guys,

Tony - yep, it's the bolt holding the leaf to the car. I don't plan on re-using the bushings.

The rear of the springs are already disconnected and lowered. I don't have an air saw but may be able to get in there with an angle grinder and slender cutoff wheel.

Slide the rearend out from the rear & see if that removes enough pressure off the spring so you can get PB Blaster up inside the bushing......

Already tried that and soaked it with PB but to no avail...

I'll try and cut it out tomorrow morning. I've put enough time on it today with removing the steering column and rack, fuel tank and almost getting the rear end out.

Nothing else left on the shell after this. Between this one bolt and the experience with the steering U-joint, I'm ready for a cold, adult beverage.

SAWZZALLL!!!!

I ~like~ the way you think, Mark. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

SAWZZALLL, I just love the sound of that word. May have to get one just to be part of the crowd.

Get a "Milwaukee" one Jack.

Accept no substitutes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Don't overlook the X-Acto manual model...for a few bucks, this little tool can do wonders with the backed razor saw blades that come in various "widths."

Bill

I got a 90 degree, cutoff, grinder, sander so guess a SAWZALL could be next. Wife won the cutoff at a womans lunchon as a door prize, go figure.

Only reason I didn't say "heat er up" was location of gas tank/fuel pump!

Tank's out... It'll be a cut-off wheel or Sawzall and some judicious knobbling with PB Blaster, a hammer and drifts now. Again: "patience" is a TOOL too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks all!

Got it out without much drama. 90* die grinder with a cutoff wheel did the trick (although the Sawzall would have had a bigger grin factor).

Nothing left on the shell now but the front crossmember and the door hinges. Front crossmember will probably come off one night this week and the door hinges will stay on for alignment checks during the sill/rocker work.

I guess to recap this weekend's garage time: Steering column, rack, fuel tank and pump, rear end, battery (was well stuck in R/H battery bin) and all remaining fuel, hydraulic lines and wiring harness all removed. She fought me this weekend but, in the end, gave her milk.

You're my new hero, Mike! Knob thru this and you'll have a permanent GRIN on yer gob!!!

The early cars are worth the effort. Really.
