trouble shifting, getting into gear &stuck in gear

Sorry; I meant the spring that holds the shifter tight against the retaining cup. If that spring is broken or slack (basically what happens when the spring breaks thru the plastic dish bushing), it'll bounce around a bit behind its retainer, the retainer will be loose, and pulling the lever into reverse is "too" easy. It'll slip between the gears with impunity, and feel loose and spongy, instead of 'snicking' into gear (well, as much as <span style="font-style: italic">any </span>Midget 'snicks' into gear

). It'll feel vaguely unconnected, and less stiff than it should. That's what I meant by 'slop.'

If, on the other hand, it feels tight, with a good strong pull up to get you into reverse, and a smooth discernable detent sliding into each forward gear; and still rocks around in 3rd like you described and tends to pop out of gear, then it's something in the internal shafts or linkages rather than the lever itself. And repair costs will go up exponentially. :wall:
