TR4/4A Triumph TR4/4A--The Horn

The wiring and grounds on my horn are fine--at least I've convinced myself of that. But I still have problems.

Here's what happens: On initial start up it often just makes a single click sound, and often does the same thing when it is sitting with the engine off or while I'm at a slow idle, like at a light.

But while driving, or after a long drive, it works fine 90% of the time.

There seems to be a connection with the operation of the engine. Could it be the horn relay? For $20 I could get a new one. thx

Have you checked the voltage at the horn? Is it the horn itself that is making the click noise, or the relay? Clean all the relevant connections and see what happens.

Of course, make sure the battery is in good shape, and the generator output is correct.
It sounds as though there is high resistance somewhere in the system that requires the added voltage of the generator running at speed to properly operate things. If you tried to operate the horn while the generator was only putting out minimum charging voltage, that could explain the 90% operation.
