Triumph Starter Question

I have a 1980 TR7 DHC. The starter works, but it stays on too long after the key is released. If the car starts, the motors winds for a second or two, as if I held the key on and over ran the starter. If the car doesn't start, then the starter will run a scond or two longer after I release the key. My question is...new starter (very expensive to install) or ignition switch sticking? or how about faulty starter relay? ANy ideas? Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
 
Johnrip, put a meter on the line going from the relay to the starter motor, turn the switch to start and see if you still have current at the starter. Most starters that run on have a bad return spring, but check this out first. Wayne
 
Bad solenoid. Mine on my TR6 would do something similar. I would turn the key and release it, but the start would grind for a split second. I would like to be able to say I had it rebuilt and it works fine now, but unfortunately it wasn't rebuilt right (by a shop who specializes in these things, nontheless!) and now I have to pull the carbs to get it back out again (Webers and Pierce manifold, won't come out without their removal). What a pain in the arse!
 
Webb, just pull the entire intake off in one piece. Your gasket against your head is new enough that you shouldn't have to change it, just bolt it right back up. 20+ lb torque.
