Since being introduced to this forum, I have been amused -- sometimes bewildered -- by some of the special language used in reference to these cars. Some are obvious, while others are not so obvious.

Here are a few I can think of off-hand. Are there others?

speedo = speedometer

tach = tachometer

tranny = transmission

dizzy = distributor

toilet seat = round style escutcheon

OD = Overdrive

BTDC = before top dead center

FLAPS = Friendly Local Auto Parts dealer

LBC = Little British Cars

crank = crankshaft

boot = trunk

bonnet = hood

wing = fender

hood = convertible top

I tend to favor the term 'gearbox' instead of tranny ever since I did a Google search for some gearbox info using 'British tranny' and ran into some very unusual blokes.

In the theme of the post I'll add:

sticks = top bows

stick cover = convertible boot

Hi, George,

I found a similar discussion about the term
dizzy," and the Brits either had never heard of it or didn't like it. Seems it may be an "Americanism."

Here are four other candidates:

"knock-offs" for wheel nuts

"coach key" for "T" handle

"top pots" for carb chambers

"diff" for differential

Whe I was restoring my GT6 body 20+ years ago, I ordered new quarter panels. They were shipped truck freight. The boxes were marked right and left "wings", which caused the truck driver to ask me if I was building an airplane.

In my case, times two, Deceased Previous Owner.

I can see it now, on the Bio Channel, a haunted car show, when the new owner drives his car and sees the DPO in the rear view mirror...

And what about "tub"? I assume it means the body of the car -- separate from the chassis -- but I may be wrong.

Chassis Number and/or Commission Number. Both are the same in the UK and are known as the VIN Number in the USA
