Triumph B-series head - a curiosity?

Don, you asked me if I had a B-series head and that got me
to thinking. I was pretty sure I had seen a large "B" stamped
somewhere on my head. Sure enough, a large "B" is stamped
into the head just to the right of valve spring No. 1

I met an older gentleman one time here on the island. He
has rebuilt a TR250. (Almost same engine as my '69 TR6)
This gentleman took a close look at my engine and intake
manifold design and proclaimed I had a high compression
head. He drove the beast and again said the car had a high compression head.

Here's a photo, Don. What made you ask if it was a B-series
head? Can you tell just by looking?

best regards,

In one of the other pics I think you can see the B. The last thread had what I meant on the B series.

On the top, middle of the head, just outside the valve cover,
passenger side is a casting "B208"

It's referred to as a "circle B" head and is a mark from the foundry that produced it, nothing more. They are reputed to have a slightly thicker casting around the valves and allow for larger valves to be installed. Because of that, racers seem to favor these heads. Whether or not there is a real difference or not... I have never seen a study comparing a "circle B" to a head from another foundry. If your engine number ends in an "HE" designation then it is a factory "high compression" engine.

I guess Don covered it pretty well in the other thread about eyes and ears for tuning...
