TripleX Glass Date Codes

British car folklore has it that there is a date code indicated by the position of the dots around the outside of the circular TripleX logo on car glass. I'm looking for an explanation of how to decipher the code.

In this first example from a Healey with a build date of February 1955, note the dot above the X at the end of the word TripleX. That supposedly indicates a date (maybe a particular month?). I suppose that the "55" in the line reading L55V may indicate the year of manufacture, or perhaps something else. Note also the dots above the two letters "E" in the line reading AGREE; I wonder what, if any, is their significance?

In this second example from a windscreen from a 1964 Phase I BJ8, note the dot above the letter "T" in TripleX and the one below the letter "A" in laminated.

There may be additional coded information in the alphanumeric etching, and I would be interested in how to decipher that as well.

Thank you to Roger Moment for these photographs, posted here with his permission.

They list the following E-Mail ADDY: jackscars@ charter.net

Contact Information

My shop is behind my house between the villages of Blowing Rock and Linville in the northwestern Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Please understand that I am a “one man show” so getting in touch with me is not exactly like calling a receptionist and having me paged. Been there, done that, won’t do it again.

Please try one of the following.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am on the Internet more often than I should be, and I check my email more often than I should, so the most positive way to get to me is through my email address.

Email: jackscars@ charter.net
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next best way to touch me is to call. I have three phones scattered in the shop but I cannot always hear them. I also am often away from the shop running errands or consulting with customers.

If you call, just endure the greeting and then leave a message. I’ll get it and return your call as promptly as possible. Don’t worry about the return long distance, my phone service is worldwide.

Telephone: 1.828.295.0224
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I pick up my mail at the village post office at least once a week. If you want to mail something use:

Post Office Box 2346, Blowing Rock, NC 28605
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are welcome to come by for a personal visit, but for your convenience you really should call first to make sure that I will be in the shop.

The physical address is 200 Wilson Coffey Road, but without directions you will have a tough time finding it up on the mountain as it is behind some really big rocks and several large clumps of rhododendron.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fax? You can’t get to me by fax. I found that the fax spam was getting to be just too much and chucked my facsimile machine last year.
