Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

WHEW!!

Gurley, AL to Durham, NC on back roads (well, when it got dark, I got on the interstate) stopping at almost every antique store we passed...left home 7am, arrived Durham after midnight....

My big purchase in Dalton, GA was 30 little oriental rugs to go on the floor of my garage next to all my cars....they're the tiny examples of the full size rugs that stores have for you to look at before they make your rug - but the new 'models' made these obsolete so they were selling them....they're about the size of a doormat....now my GarageMahal will have some class! For 6 bucks apiece!

Picked up my MGB Works (factory) hardtop early this morning, left Durham around 8am & got home about 7:30pm...spent some time in Maggie Valley on way home.

Now all my MGB/C roadsters have a factory hardtop!

Next I'll concentrate on Midget hardtops....I've got a factory hardtop for my '74 MkIII Midget & a factory hardtop for a MkII Midget (which I don't own yet - am looking to buy a '66 Midget to go under it!)..so, I still need a MkI Midget hardtop & a 1500 Midget hardtop.

Oh, I'm zipping along today in southeast NC on a curvey back road when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I see an Aston Martin DB4....turn around quickly & backtrack to a restoration shop that specializes in old Mercedes convertibles....there were big 50's Mercedes convertibles, 190SL's, 280'SLs, big 60's Mercedes convertibles being restored...there was also a Pagoda topped SL historic racer in the shop along with the Aston.....and a lone MGA in a corner also under restoration.

...what a shop (between Maggie Valley & Murphy, NC, south of the Cherokee Reservation, in a curve, tucked into a hillside!)

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Surprised you didn't bring home another car, Tony. We were all expecting it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Didn't take trailer on purpose - & removed ball from the hitch receiver so I wouldn't be tempted to rent a trailer....did see an early chrome bumper car sticking its nose out from under a tarp on the Indian reservation....& a couple of GT's in a junk yard - along with a pair of big Jag sedans, an XKE coupe & about a dozen British motorcycles (guy said he doesn't sell, he collects...well, in a ferw years he will have collected a bunch or iron oxide!)

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Sounds like a fun trip....Now I really want that jealousy icon.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

:JEALOUSY: -- hmmm... don't seem it's 'available' yet.

... BENZ RESTO'S?!?! Did a 220 convertible a while back. Column shift, neat old lump. They were well out in front of "the pack" even then.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Doc, he had a 50's - think '57 - 220 convertible in prime.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Place is in Andrews, NC on US 19.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

You mean "They" don't follow you home? I was under this wierd impression that, somehow, cars pick their owners. This story isn't over, yet. I admire your extraordinary will to not look back.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

I think Tony showed great restrant and should be commended for it.

Just think, he came home without another car. You know that was hard.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Very hard. I notice he was looking though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Stuart.

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

I don't think he is physically capable of not looking. Maybe there's a gene for LBC ownership. Could be a scientific study in there somewhere. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

It's probably because he didn't want to start rebuilding the garage-mahal at this time of the year /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Re: Trip Report & Update on theAutoist Collection

Maybe cause they ran out of oriental rugs.

Now that he's on the forum as a commercial sponsor he won't have time to do any restorations.

[/ QUOTE ]

He hasn't been able to do any restorations for a long time....my '53 TD is completely disassembled for paint & I'm finally giving it to a bodyman end of month - told him to strip, paint, reassemble - & let me know when I can come over & drive it on my trailer!
