My dad is a retired auto mechanic and he can keep a battery going forever. The battery is basically six containers of sulfuric acid with a plate on each side of the container. If it isn't taking a charge, disconnect the battery and carefully drop squarely on a flat surfuce such as a piece of plywood. What you are trying to do is dislodge the sulfer buildup on one of the plates. Some times you can "save" a battery for several yrs. He had one battery in his big boat over 20 yrs when he sold the boat. Also, if the charger is old, sometimes they get where they can't start charging the battery, if your charger is old, this could be a problem. Hope I didn't confuse the issue, but finally, batteries get old(usually it is this sulfer buildup) and simply need replaced.
