Tri carb

Hi fellas , I’ve got a mk11 BT7 to rebuild with the tri carb set . A simple question really .... are there any benefits to keeping this set up or would it be better to change to the bi- carb set up . I had a Healey the same as this some 25 years ago that I totally rebuilt . I set up the carbs and it ran fine (more by luck than judgement I’m beginning to think ) but after some things I’ve read about their set up I’m wondering if there inclusion is more ball-ache than their worth. Are they worth the effort ?

If you can tune 2 carbs, you can tune 3; there's is ZERO MAGIC involved or required.

I think the press of the day poisoned the public against them__nothing else to complain about hardly seems likely__and people have perpetuated the myth.

The most common and believable rumor was that three (2) SUs were fitted to homologate any brand of triple carbs__read WEBER__for the factory's rally efforts. When the Series Type evolved to the new improved convertible, it was a convenient time to phase them out, as the production cost was undoubtedly higher and the FIA requirement had already been met.

Or, something like that...

I agree with Randy. They were used for homologation then dropped for cost saving reasons. Set them up correctly on a rolling road and then don’t touch them. People like to fiddle with SUs for some reason, usually when they have an ignition problem. They don’t go out of tune by themselves.

Thanks for your replies fellas , I don’t seem to recall them being a big issue last time . I used an old air flow meter that I balanced them up with. I did put it on a rolling road and never had any problems . The tuners comments about the original wire gauze air filters were comical , thus I ended up with shiny k&N ‘s

For sure Richard, stay with three. Once they're set, there's no issues with triple SU's. Plus they look pretty sweet.

I think I can answer that. They are easy to mess with, and when you are young and don't have a lot of money and adjusting carbs is free that is the first thing you do when your car doesn't run right. Totally agree with everything you said though, once set they should work fine for a long time, and back to the original question, one more vote for staying with the tri-carb set up.
