TRF Gearbox Cover Repair

Hi all:

My TRF plastic gearbox cover has cracked due to me not using the soft rubber seal under it before I bolted it down (I never said I was very bright ...)

I would like to try to repair it using a plastic welding kit (like the one Eastwood sells) instead of buying a new one. Does anyone know what type of plastic this cover is made out of? The plastic welding rods available are Polyethylene, PVC, Polyurethane, Polypropylene, and ABS. My guess is ABS, but I thought I'd ask you guys about it before I gave it a shot.

Thanks as always for your help.

Matt

Make a call to TRF. I would think they should know.

Hi,

Depending upon where the cover is cracked, you might also be able to pop rivet a patch of sheet aluminum to make a repair.

Another idea, there are some places selling two piece covers, with a more easily removed rear section to give access to the overdrive, etc. I think it would be pretty easy to modify a one piece cover into a two-piece. Again, depending upon where yours is cracked, this might be an option.
