Hey Gang,

Well we’re going to sell the wife’s old 95 Explorer (2WD) but first I have to swap out the Transmission with the rebuild unit that arrived today. Its been a while since I ever did this but if I recall correctly it ain’t rocket science.

Trouble is in preparation for a project I like to read over the steps in the manual a few days (or in this case a week) in advance to make sure I don’t have to make any last minute runs for special tools or parts that may have been overlooked. Anyway I think I’m set as the whole thing seems pretty strait forward.

However I seem to recall that you needed to put some fluid in the Torque converter prior to mounting it on the transmission. Is this true or should I just follow the manual and fill the transmission after it is installed?

Bret , if your careful when you remove the TQ, there will be fluid in it. The real trick is in not wearing it all. You didnt say if you are replacing it or not. so if you can avoid spilling all of it by keeping it fairly upright then you should be all set with some fluid allready in it. the other half of the trick is in keeping it there while you reinstall it. A tranny jack is a wonderful thing. I usually lube the shafts and the TQ seal before reinstalling. I have done them with out putting any fluid in and havent had any problems. it just takes a little bit for the tranny fluid to get moved into the TQ.

Oops, sorry I wasn’t clear.

I am replacing the transmission and the torque converter with fresh rebuilt units. I just wasn't sure if there it would be a problem or not if I didn't at least add “some(?)” fluid before installation. Old unit(s) are to be returned for my core charge.

But thanks, I’ll be sure to put a little fluid on the shafts before I install the TC. And my neighbor has a transmission jack he said I could use.

Funny thing inspecting the rebuilt transmission I was surprised how light it is (no fluid) and going back & fourth between the old tranny and the new one it looks like a strait fit. I just need to see if my neighbor wouldn’t mind lending me his hands while I get the new one up into place. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
