Transmission Problem '78

My '78 will not stay in reverse. It keeps popping out. If I try to hold the lever in position, it will still pop out or clunk repeatedly.

Any suggestions that might be able to be done without pulling the gearbox?

Nope, you need to pull the tranny.

I'm sorry to say, that means engine too. But fear not, as i've removed and installed the engine once already on my '76, so its not as hard as it looks. Figure a day to pull it and another to put it back in. I, as well as a number of the rest of us, would be happy to provide technical help where ever possible.

There is a slight possibilty that the exposed shift rail (on top of the trans...covered by a plastic tube) is gunked up and not allowing the trans to go fully "home" into reverse. The shift mechanism itself can also wear creating problems. Remove the shift lever (by pushing down the retainer and turning it) and inspect/clean/lube the linkage.
Unfortunately, I'd guess it's more serious. As the guys above have said, you'll probably need to remove the engine/trans.
If you are going to try to "live with it" for a while, be sure to change the trans fluid right away. This may get much of the metal chips and debris out...if left in , debris in the trans may kill your forward gears very soon.

Thanks for your input.
I checked the external linkage and all seems ok, so I guess I have to pull the gearbox. I already found a replacement.

I figure it will take about 4-6 hours with two friends and a case of beer or all weekend with 4 friends and 3 cases of beer.
