Transmission Oil Recommendations

AH Fans Everywhere,

OK... 1958 AH 100-6 (BN4).. OD tranny...

Manual recommends Castrol GTX.. what viscosity do you recommend??? Or, what other oil??

Well Ron,

AH Fans everywhere probably use a lot of different types. My BJ8 OD trans has had:
Shell 30W HD
Castrol GTX 20/50W
Redline MT90
Valvoline VR1 50W

The weather here (you know how cold it gets in Valley Center!) had some bearing on how it performed. The Shell 30W was a little stiff and slow to engage the OD early in the morning. The Castrol was a little thin at times. I ran the Redline for a year and liked it. I started using the VR1 a month ago. It seems to be doing good so far.

Other conerns: Motor oils hold particles in suspension which keeps the particles moving through the trans. Gear oil (MT90) lets the particles drop to the bottom of the case. 70k miles of motor oil in the gear case seemed to work quite well though. Redline runs $10/qt, Castrol runs $3/qt, VR1 runs $5/qt, Shell runs $2/qt. The synchros in the BJ8 don't have problems with the GL5 (is that the right one?) oils. But if you have brass synchros, you need to stay away from some of the different gear oils because of the corrosive effect they have on brass.

Well Mark pretty well covered the slice. Just pick a single viscosity motor oil of your choice and it will be fine. I am partial to the Valvoline VR1 product.---Fwiw--Keoke

Get off the shelf no-name non detergent 30wt or Redline MT90.

I have Millers 20/50 in my engine and gearbox at the moment but would not mind throwing Castrol 20/50 in next time. The good book seems to indicate that if you are operating at temperatures between plus 5 and minus 12 celcius you can still use 20/50 or drop to 10/40

Well Gentlemen,

That just about covers it.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Mark, Hope to see you at the San Diego British Car Days in Bonsall next Sunday.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

I will will bringing my nearly finished '57 MGA and my business partner will be bringing his, also nearly finished, 58 100-6... Both are roadworthy but not quite in show condition.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Hey Ron,

I plan on being there. My engine is a little apart right now as I wait for some parts (like the head) to get back. If I get it running in time, I will drive the car. Otherwise, we will bring the Excursion. Don't know if I can get that into the show..... Might have to park outside. Definitely better to bring your LBC. The parking is much better with it!

Mark

Mark,

I look forward to meeting you there... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

I SHOULD be there with my partially completed '57 MGA, It has no interior except for two worn RED seats.... If this puppy doesn't make it then I am doing booth duty at the entrance and at the MG Club tent...My name is Ron Z (name withheld to protect the guilty) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
