Transmission oil pump question

Hi. I'm new to the forum. Currently, I'm deep into a frame-up of a '57 MGA.

I'm inspecting and - maybe, but hopefully not - rebuilding my transmission and have a question about the oil pump.

This is the part listed by Moss as a "spacer" on the ouput mainshaft, next to the spedo gear.

On mine, the pump/spacer rotates freely around the mainshaft. Is it supposed to do this, or is it supposed to be fixed to the shaft and only rotate when the shaft does?

Thanks for any help.

Yeah. I think that's right. It apparently is somewhat of a pump, though. The spacer/pump has a hole at the end of a spiral groove and there is a matching hole in the shaft that lines up with it. I think it supplies a small amount of oil to the insides of a couple of gears. I tightened up the nut retaining the speedo gear and everything is solid now.

Thanks - and, nice Healey.
