Transmission Fun

Stayed up late last night dismantling my transmission. It were pretty fun. That is until I got to the circlips (the guy who invented those should be lynched or something) and the "easing" the bearing off the mainshaft part. That bearing seems pretty much fused to the main shaft. Anybody have any tips on gettin' that stubborn MF off? Who 'bout another method for getting the mainshaft out?

Just FYI, mine is a 1500 Midget.

So far as the main bearing goes....
I made a slide hammer out of a section of lead pipe.
Where do you get lead pipe, do you ask? I got mine when I replaced my old plumbing.

As for the circlips.....I bought a new lay-shaft after "loosing my temper"
(An EXTREMELY unusual event for me)

I am working on a few trannys and all this is very fresh in my head.
I just put the 2nd one back together tonight. Took 4 apart over the weekend.
Use a torch on the bearing inner race and try not to heat up the mainshaft. Once it's hot, it expands and taps right off.
I used this same trick for installing the input shaft in the alum case, no sense beating the bellhousing to death trying to get the input shaft in that hole. Heat the bell housing near the shaft, grab the front of it and wiggle it right in.
Just remember you are heating to EXPAND the metal, not melt it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Frank,

I tried your trick with a propane torch with no luck. Should I get a hotter torch? Do I need to just heat longer?

Thanks!

I use a mapp gas torch.
You do have the nut, speedo drive, and tube off the tail shaft right? Heat the inner ring of the bearing and use a cold chisel or big screwdriver as a wedge and tap it in at a few spots around the bearing. Remember just try to heat the bearing and not the shaft. Squirt it with a little liquid wrench or oil too.

Thanks Frank.

I got it off this afternoon with a little patience, a benzine torch and a BF hammer. I hammered the main shaft forward until the bearing was off the shoulder on the shaft, then I hammerd the main shaft back to free the outer bearing from the casing.
