I posted this on another forum with no replies so am trying again here, and hopefully a little more concise. I am disassembling a spare transmission that's been in storage for 50 years. Top gears were pretty dry but after oiling everything seemed to work except that the transmission would lock occasionally so I assume that when I tried to get the speedometer gear assembly out the transmission was locked. The driven gear and bearing were stuck also so I put an old cable nut on the bearing and turned the assembly clockwise to free it. That did the trick but apparently destroyed the driven gear. When removed the driven gear it spun normally in the bearing, was oily and no sign of being seized. I don't see why that should have destroyed the gear even if the transmission had been stuck when I turned the driven gear bearing.
When I removed the tail housing I also found a piece of cir-clip which might account for the locking, if I didn't break it removing the housing. I used a bearing splitter and puller as suggested by Buckeye Triumphs and fairly little force.
Any thoughts appreciated.
