Transmission check

With the advice of y'all, here's my current plan for my transmission. I've got 2 ribcase tranys to choose from, and I'm hoping one of them will be in decent shape.

1. Remove side cover and inspect gears for wear
- Watch for 2 springs that will pop out (remove cover slowly)
- Check reverse gear as well
- Look at first gear and the lay gear for signs of wear, double check the lock bolts on the shifter forks, they do come loose, I think an 11/32 nut driver fits the small head and then 7/16 for the lock nut.
- To measure wear on the cones, you need to have the trans apart but you can look for chips or rust on the cones and any chipped or worn teeth.

2. Wiggle the input shaft, should have some movement but not a lot (I'll post video for group review)

3. Replace the tail shaft seal ORDER
- It is crimped on, a cut off wheel will slice it in half or beat it off with a dull screw driver.
- Dimple the new one back in 3 places with a dull screw driver.

4. Install any other gaskets/seals

5. Install release bearing, bushings, etc for clutch
 
Be watchful as not ALL Ribcases have the same internals.

Please don't ask how I know.

Easiest way to check which is which is to look at the lay-cluster (big 4 gear piece facing you). The tranny for the later cars has gear #22G1100 and the one for the early cars, with the 10cg engine I think, is #22G76). The difference is in the angle cut of 3rd gear and they will NOT interchange.
