I'm new to this forum. I have a 1967 MGBGT. The only problem I can find with the car is that I do not have overdrive. With the amount of driving I do in my car, and traveling to car shows it would be a nice feature. Does anyone know where I can get a transmission w\ OD for my car. A rebuilt one from Moss is close to $2000. I'm not sure if I'm ready to pay that yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would go with the 5 speed. If you want to go with overdrive for originality's sake - there's one on ebay right now. Check there every few weeks, always one available. I tend to like to see the cars stay close to stock, hate some of the quirky add-ons some people make, which there are plenty out there. But i wouldnt hesitate to go with 5 speed. keep your old tranny - next owner might want to revert. good luck

I've heard that there's some company that makes a kit for putting the Ford Sierra 5 Speed in the B.
I personally have the OD tranny which I'm not crazy about because:
a) You have to cut the tranny hump to install it.
b) It's stupid-expensive
If I had my way, I would get the 5-speed.

Lots of choices out there. Here are some web pages that you can start looking. Even if you don’t go with any of them, it’ll give you a good idea what is involved.

Most options seem to favor the Ford Sierra Type 9 Gearbox. But I think that the Rivergate kit seems to be the neatest conversion using a 5-speed from a Datsun 280Z. They claim that this kit is actually 23 pounds lighter than a standard MGB 4 speed.
That said – I agree that you should keep your eyes open for other resources. Ebay (as pointed out) is one possibility but this option comes with some unknowns. Your local pick-your-parts auto salvage would be another.
Likewise there are some kits that will provide everything you need along with the transmission. But in this case that five speed might cost just as much as the Moss OD Transmission.
Personally I’d look into finding out what kind of kits are available in your price range and then start checking into getting a used transmission. Save a few buck that way but to be safe I’d also try’n factor in the cost of a servicing and worst case a complete rebuild.

One guy I know of in our car club converted his 1950's MG Magnette ZB to a european Ford Sierra 5-speed. I'm sure the Magnette conversion would be very similar to converting a B. He is trying to sell it, so I have seen the information posted in his ad, in the ad he says that it makes freeway driving excellent.
I'm not sure if he used a kit, or how he went about it, I could maybe find out.
