Trans/overdrive questions

I am prepping a late OD trans for installation in my '74 that I bought in an '80 parts car. I put it on my lathe and spun the output shaft up to 1000 rpm, but no OD engagement. I also noticed the input shaft had some runout and looseness.

I took the solenoid out a while ago and it was free, but haven't done anything else. Solenoid does not make very encouraging noises when energized. Oil was down, I addded some, but no response. Any hints on what to dig onto without getting into too much trouble? I would like to check clutch mat'l in the OD after reading end of world scenarios on the QM site. I should also check oil pump in OD, I gather.

Thanks for any help--

You were in third of forth and engergised with 12v when it was attached to the lathe correct?

I spun mine on the bench with a 1300 rpm drill. It took a good 5 seconds for the o/d to kick in at that speed.

I'm sure you did, but I have to ask.Did you put oil in the trans? 3rd or 4th gear only during test? A good 12V power source to the solenoid with the ground securly attached to the trans housing? I put a rocker switch in the + side so I could switch it on and off.

I'm not on this site very often...are you aware of the John Twist Video on how to check the switches?

Sorry I can't help with the other questions. I took a chance, replaced front and rear seals and installed it. Works great. Kicks in much quicker at the higher engine RPM's. Get it fixed and installed. It's sooooworth it!

Awesome video. I tested all my wiring but assumed that this worked. I'll have to run that test and see if the test light comes on in third & forth.

I put power directly to solenoid, so other switches were out of the loop. Did not have oil, I added some. Maybe it takes a while to flow into OD unit? Rotation was CW looking into bellhousing.
