TR6 Trans number decode

Just pulled the trans out of my '71TR6. The number cast on the trans is CD32835. The comm. no. on the car is CF 59***. Can't find any reference materials that will tell me if the trans is original to the car. Any ideas?

There's a brief summary in the Moss catalog, which seems to imply they don't match. OTOH, it claims that CF commission numbers didn't start until 1973, while CD32835 seems about right for a 71 gearbox (started at CD20000 in 1970). So maybe it's not the gearbox that is 'wrong' ???

Bob-The comm. no. for a 71 should have a CC prefix and according to the production data section in the Moss catalog, runs from 60903-67983. I believe that unsold cars at the years end could be re-titled for the following year, which would tend to muddy the water.
The gearbox numbers (according to the TRF catalog) were prefixed with CC prior to 72.
Just for comparison, my 71 has comm. no. CC63230L and trans. no. CD37315. The trans. no. is stamped., not cast.

Bob, I think you have a '74-'76 transmission. Not that unusual.

Where do you see that ?

Randall-I must of been having a senior moment. CD is correct, CC came later. Thanks for keeping me honest.

As others have indicated, for a 1971 US spec car, the serial number should begin with "CC" and the transmission should have "CD" prefix, mine happens to CD29257. Your chassis number itself being "59***" would put it being a made sometime in the October/November of 1971 time frame for a build date, perhaps the build plate was changed and whoever did it screwed up the Prefix as the last "CF" chassis number was CF58238 built on 15 July 1976. My production survey info shows the first 1970 car (CC50001) as being built on 22 November 1969 with the first car built in January 1970 being CC51033. First car built in January of 1971 was CC60903 with the last 1971 car being CC67893 from 20 August 1971.

The 1970 and 1971 models were a bit unusual in that they were lumped together under a single production run by serial numbers. The change over from 1970 to 1971 models appear to have been in the CC562xx range and was not clean cut. It may have been a side by side line and it depended on which line the car sat on to be designated a 1970 or 1971 for some short period of time. This would be in line with what happened with the 1969 cars and 1970 cars where the last 1969 car (CC32142) was built on 19 December 1969, about a month later than CC50001 in the above paragraph.
