tranny up-date

while i am waiting for parts, i couldn't help but take apart some of the mainshaft. i found 2 of the three ball springs on the first gear broken. one spring was broken into 3 pieces. the one good spring and ball was gooped into the hole and made no attempt to fly out across the basement. when i was ordering parts i was going to reuse the springs. now i'm glad i ordered new ones. i'm not sure what the impact is if the ball springs are broken, but i do know this tranny locked up quite a bit. there was also a small plunger in this gear assembly that is missing from my other mainshaft. it seems i am finding many pieces of this car taken apart by a PO or mechanic and then assembled without all the parts being replaced. it's a wonder the tranny worked at all. guess i'll have to keep disassembling to ensure it's all there and intact.

Re: tranny up-date

Right down to component bits. A friend who has his London Guilds Cert once said:"These cars will run even if they're HALF right!"

...but they'll go a lot longer and better if done once right. The poor things are half century old in design by now and usually bodged horribly one way or another in their lifetimes. Take nothing for granted and you'll come out with a great car.

Re: tranny up-date

i'm really glad these parts are still available and/or easy to find. it's satifying to be able to put something back together the right way and completely after seeing some of these half-jobs. i do agree that these cars would still run with half or more of the parts missing.

Re: tranny up-date

There were many years in the mid to late 80's when parts were harder to find for these cars. It was during this time that many of the DPO did what they had to do to keep the cars on the road.

So... sometime when you are cursing a DPO, you might need to be thanking him instead. His bodge might have kept the car out of the crusher.

Re: tranny up-date

yeah, i was looking at some alignment pins last night that were basically sheet metal screws.
