Tranny[gearbox] Fill

Hi all,

I bought a rough 1976 Midget last year. Got the engine running, cleaned it up some but never actually got it on the road yet. I need to drain and refill the gearbox and rear end.

I'm trying to figger out how to refill the gearbox. It looks like I'm gonna have to jack her up, crawl underneath, and pump the oil up, similar to refilling a lower unit on an outboard motor. Am I missing something? Is there any way to even check it without crawling under the car?

I looked through my service manuals (Chiltons and Haynes) and have yet to see a good explanation. Also searched the forum with no luck. <shrug> Any help/advice in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Lift the carpet up by the cross member/tranny tunnel near where they all meet by the bulkhead and you will see a rubber plug there. Remove the rubber plug and look down and you will see the fill cap. Drain is on the bottom of the tranny where the tunnel begins.

I put a clear vinyl hose on the end of the gear oil bottle and ran the hose into the fill hole from under the hood. I did not know about the hole in the tunnel. As the '76 has a very different gear box than the earlier Midgets, does the tunnel hole still line up with the fill plug?

There's a cheap (<$15) tool that can be used to pump fluids (oil especially). I got one and it's come in handy again and again. However, the name of it escapes me. It's basically a tube with a piece of hose on one end and a plunger on the other. You can unscrew it to fill it (or suck the fluid in through the hose).

OOPs I missed the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt, it's a suction gun. Also sometimes referred to as a "Rose Gun."

No hole on the passenger side which is where I think the gearbox fill hole is. Maybe I should cut one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thx for the responses so far. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
