Trailing arm studs

I just started replacing the springs and bushings on my 6.
While reassembling the axle to the trailing arm studs (6 of them) I found that one was loose, so I removed it only to find that at some point some PO had installed a heli coil which was in pieces in the hole.
So my question is: How do I repair the stud? Do I install another heli coil? Get a larger stud and retap the hole?
If you have made this repair, how did you do it?
I am open to your suggestions!

You have a few options. You can replace the heli coil. You can find a stud that is 5/16-18 on one side and 1/4-28 at the other. Another option, which requires the most work but would be a permanent fix, is a keensert. These are threaded inserts of much better quality than heli coils.
There have been other threads regarding keenserts that go into a little depth.

Paul, Doug-
Thanks for your input. Somehow I just knew there had to be a better solution than the helicoil. The good news is that only one of the studs seems to be stripped (but I haven't got to the other side yet!)
Thanks again for the great and fast help.
Bobby.... thank you also for the great info on the repair too!

Elliot, Paul, Doug: could one of youse guys please post some photos of your trailing arm surgery? This is a prominent and oft encountered problem with TR-6s, the photos would be most useful.

Sorry to task you, but the pictures are worth 1000 words.

Thanks!
