I have a sony in mine, my son upgraded his stereo to a very nice Alpine with MP3 so I got his old stereo. I will look model number up later tonight when I head back down to the garage. Fits well diameter and height, depth is a little long so it stick out a little more that I'd like
 
How about one of those ones that mount in the trunk and run by remote control. You only see the face plate. Popular with the street rodders.
 
I recently installed a Sony CDXGT540UI in my TR8. I chose this based on good reviews, a decent price, and features. I like that the front panel has an aux input and a USB input. It can also control an iPod, if I ever get one.

Installation was not difficult and there was no problem with fit.

This thread is ancient, but I'm bumping it. I'm looking for anything other than the JVC unit that fits correctly. I don't care about CDs, I just want to play my iPod without showing wires. I'd really rather not get a unit that protrudes out.
 
I have an 8 track I took out of mine if someone wants a period piece
 
I installed a Retrosound unit. Kind of pricey, but fits well, doesn't look too out of place (like may of the units today that look like video games), and has a remote dongle (I mounted it the glove box) that takes memory cards.

I have to say that's kind of tempting. I could drive around blasting my Captain Beefheart 8-track.
 
I replaced my Blaupunkt with another. All the Blaupunkt units are 6.5" deep and fit flush in the dash with a little bit of effort.

Why not dispense with the radio altogether?

Back in the '80's, I used an Aiwa AM/FM walkman as my head end unit, headphone out to an ADS amp and speakers. I was tired of my BMW being broken into, and this setup worked great for years.

Just picked up an Apple 160 GB iPod, and again, you could run the headphone out into an amp and then speakers. You could even run the iPod into a little EQ, and then the amp. What's cool about the older iPods is that you can add an inline FM tuner as well.

Just make sure you have the volume down when powering on the iPod; you'll need a separate power switch for the amp, of course. Except for a stereo mini to RCA patch cord, it can all be stored unobtrusively in the trunk!

If you want to go period correct with a TR8, NOS vintage pioneer AM/FM Cassettes come up on E-bay from time to time, they are will built and I have one in my TR250, not period correct for my car, but looks better than a new electronically tuned thingy, and I didn't have to cut the dash support. If you still have old cassettes it works pretty good, if you want to listen to digital music they make amps just for that purpose that go under the seat with a remote control unit, if that is the route you go you could just put a dead period radio in the dash for appearance sake.
